I'm used to it, but it clearly has disadvantages which are more apparent on the fiddle than on fretted chest position instruments. I've played flip guitar for 20 years, flip mando for 11 and flip fiddle for 8. Greetings screech - I'm a "flip" fiddler in Cincinnati, Ohio. If you get good at fiddling, you can always get Steve or some other fiddle maker to properly set you one up later. Lord only knows where you will find a left handed chinrest though LOL!Īll in all, give her a try. Probably can't get by with the old nut as the slots are closer to the fingerboard on the E string than the G if properly cut. If you can tolerate that inconvience, then a new nut and bridge should set you going. Pegs are as they are so as not to be in your way.

Most fingerboards are leaned to the E string just a bit to make fingering easier and that will be on the wrong side iffin you reverse it. The same on a fiddle, it will adequately reproduce the sound even though the strings are reversed. The bracing don't care where the vibration comes from, it will do it's thing. When I convert guitars, I merely fill the old slot and cut one the other way for the new bridge bone. I wouldn't worry about the bass bar position or the position of the post. How does fiddle differ from violin in setup? What would I expect to spend for this? Are there lefty beginner instruments for cheaper than conversion and where?Īren't there some Old-time fiddlers who were lefty and played righty instruments? Any arguments for going that route.Īny other advise from Lefties, other than stick with guitar? Would I take this to a violin shop or look for an Old-time music shop? I live in Indianapolis now and there should be some traditional resources within a tank of gas. I tried many times to play RH guitar and just don't feel comfortable and tried this instrument as is with the same result. I think its still worth 500-1000 so I don't want to do anything that can't be reversed but I would like to get it switched to lefty and "set up" like a fiddle. Heberlein Jr., Markneukirchen 1921, Copie Antonius Stradivarius, Made In Germany. I have my father's student violin, Heinrich E. I have some guitar background, left-handed. Even though I am in my late forties I would like to try fiddling.
